JUGS Protector Series Square Baseman Screen with Wheel Kit

$930.95

JUGS Protector Series Square Baseman Screen with Wheel Kit

The JUGS Protector Series Square Baseman Screen with Wheel Kit is a solid 7 ft x 7 ft baseball protective screen for the players and coaches who stand in the field while live hitting is going on. Set it in front of a first baseman taking throws during batting practice, a fielder working through a station, or a coach feeding drills, and the double-thick polyester netting and padded steel frame stand between them and batted balls. A wheel kit comes standard, so one person can roll it to wherever it is needed.

It is the square, full-coverage member of the black Protector Series, sharing its frame, netting and padding with the L-shaped, C-shaped, sock-net and short-toss screens.

Protection for First Base and Fielders During Live Hitting

Batting practice is most efficient when the defense works at the same time as the hitters: infielders field ground balls and throw across to first, and outfielders track fly balls. The person most exposed in that setup is the first baseman, who has to turn toward the infield to receive throws while balls are being hit toward the right side.

A square screen placed in front of the bag gives that player a wall of netting to work behind. The first baseman receives the throw, then steps back behind the screen while the next pitch is delivered. The same placement works for a coach standing near a base during situational drills, or a pitcher waiting at a station while the cage is live.

Unlike the Protector Series L-Shaped Screen, which has a cut-out for a machine or thrower, this screen has no opening. All 7 ft x 7 ft is netting, which is what a fielder standing behind it wants.

Heavy Netting Over a Padded Steel Frame

The netting is double-thick 691-90 ply polyester. A screen in front of a base catches line drives at full speed off the bat, often from players who are not trying to avoid it, so the net is made heavy enough for hard-hit baseballs and repeated contact through a whole season.

The frame is 1.5 inch cold-rolled steel tubing, wrapped in pearl-foam padding with a vinyl cover. The steel keeps the screen planted when it is hit, and the padding cuts down on rebounds off the tubing so a ball that hits the frame does not come back hard toward the fielder. The padding also protects the steel, which helps the screen last.

Bolted Assembly, No Welding or Lacing

The JUGS Protector Series Square Baseman Screen goes together with double-bolted joints. There is no welding and no lacing to do, so the screen can be assembled quickly and securely when it arrives.

Moving the JUGS Protector Series Square Baseman Screen

A field screen only helps if it is in the right place, and a 7 ft x 7 ft steel screen is a lot to carry across the diamond. The Protector Series Wheel Kit now comes standard. Lift the screen directly above the wheel kit, kick the wheels under it, and one person can roll it from first base to third, out to a fielding station, or back to the storage shed after practice.

Who This Square Field Screen Is For

  • High school baseball programs that run live batting practice with a full defense on the field.
  • College programs that rotate players through several stations at once and need protection at more than one spot on the field.
  • Coaches who stand in the field to run drills while hitters are swinging.

Practice Ideas

  • First base during batting practice: set the screen a step in front of and to the side of the bag so the first baseman can receive throws and then step behind it.
  • Infield station: place it in front of a coach hitting or rolling ground balls while another group hits in the cage.
  • Bullpen or side area: use it to shield players waiting their turn near an active hitting area.

Pair it with a Bucket of JUGS Pearl Baseballs and a Back-Saver Portable Ball Basket to keep the drill moving.

Other Protector Series Screens

The C-Shaped Softball Screen protects fastpitch machine feeders, the Square Screen with Sock-Net adds a 3 ft sock that catches balls during tee and toss work, and the Short-Toss Screen is a compact 7 ft x 4 ft screen for close-range toss. For coaches hitting fungoes, there is also the Protector Blue Series 8-Foot Fungo Screen. Worn netting can be replaced with Protector Series Replacement Netting in the Square size.
