What the SR3800 Brings to the SRDL-38-KIT

The SR3800 covers 10 to 250 MPH at 1 MPH resolution and reads a baseball to roughly 130 feet with the noise filter at its nF1 setting, with range strongest between 30 and 100 MPH. It reads through chain link fencing, so the operator does not have to leave the safety of the backstop to get a number.

Pull and release the trigger and the gun reports the fastest speed it saw. Pull and hold instead and it captures two speeds from the same pitch, toggling between the release reading and the reading as the ball crosses the plate. The gap between those two numbers is what tells a pitching coach how much a fastball is carrying, and it is the feature that separates this gun from the SR3600.

A nine step noise filter runs from nF1, the least aggressive setting with the longest reach, to nF9, which pulls the readable range in to about 20 feet to reject interference from lights, motors, fans and other radar in the same building. The gun powers up on nF2 by default and remembers whatever settings were last used, including whether the confirmation beeper is on, which matters when clocking from the stands during a game.

This Kit Is Not for Inflatable Speed Pitch

The SR3800's reach becomes a liability inside an inflatable speed pitch game. The gun keeps reading past the target, picks up motion off the inflatable walls and returns speeds that do not belong to the pitch. This kit is not compatible with inflatable setups. Anyone running an inflatable booth should buy the SRDL-36-KIT instead, where the SR3600's 60 foot ball range is a deliberate design choice.

The 4 Inch Display and How Far It Reads

The DL431-R shows three 4 inch red LED digits, reads to 999 and stays legible from roughly 200 feet in shaded light with a wide viewing angle. It is the indoor and shaded area board: LED digits wash out in direct sun, the enclosure is not waterproof, and the power supply is built for indoor use. A 1/4-20 thread on the bottom and two hanging brackets on the back cover most mounting situations, and the included table top stand handles the rest.

If the number has to carry to a grandstand rather than to the mound, the 8 inch board in the SRDL-838-KIT reads to about 350 feet and takes up to four radar inputs. Same gun, bigger screen.

Setting Up and Powering the SRDL-38-KIT

The gun connects to the display over the included 25 foot RJ45 cable at 1200 baud. Shielded 25 and 50 foot extenders stack to a 100 foot maximum run with a coupler at each join, which is usually enough to put the board on a fence while the gun sits behind the plate.

Power is flexible. The gun runs on two 9V alkaline batteries, on a wall adapter through its external power jack, or directly from a Sports Radar display over the data cable, which is the arrangement worth knowing about for a permanent cage or bullpen install because it removes batteries from the routine entirely. On batteries, expect up to 12 hours of continuous running and roughly 60 hours in trigger mode.

For hands free work the gun threads onto any 1/4-20 camera tripod and runs in continuous mode with a selectable delay of 0.5 or 2.5 seconds between readings, updating as fast as two speeds per second.
