JUGS Softball Backyard Net Package

$2,856.95

JUGS Softball Backyard Net Package

The JUGS Softball Backyard Net Package is a complete backyard fastpitch softball batting cage for players who throw live batting practice or plan to add a pitching machine. It includes a 55-foot JUGS #10 Fastpitch batting cage net, a galvanized steel frame, a padded Protector Blue Series C-shaped softball screen, and a backdrop and pitcher's trainer. Together they give a softball player a full-length cage at home for hitting, pitching and live arm drills.

It is aimed at backyard players, youth league families and high school softball players. Buying the net, frame and screen as one package means the sizes match from the start: the frame is built for the #10 cage, and the C-screen is shaped for an underhand release.

A 55-Foot Fastpitch Batting Cage

The net is the JUGS #10 Fastpitch size: 55 feet long, 12 feet wide and 12 feet high. That length suits fastpitch distances, with room behind the pitcher or machine for the screen and space at the plate for a full swing. Twelve feet of width and height give hitters room to swing freely and contain high foul tips and line drives.

The netting is twisted, knotted black polyethylene in the #27 twine gauge. Polyethylene does not absorb water, so it resists rot in wet or humid weather. Twisted netting presents less surface to the ball than braided netting, so balls spin and slide off and the twine sees less abrasion. The black color is chosen for UV protection on a net that stays outdoors.

The net is hung on the square, with 1 3/4 inch mesh, heavy-duty polypropylene rope borders on all edges including the vertical corners, and rib-line ropes down the center that add suspension points and reduce sag. It is stretched under hydraulic tension during manufacturing so the knots stay locked and the net keeps its shape. A built-in Hitter's Door makes it easy to step in and out.

Galvanized Steel Frame

The frame holds the net up and in shape. Every piece of pipe is industrial-gauge galvanized steel for rust resistance outdoors. Uprights and cross members are 2 inches in diameter and seat into 2 5/16 inch ground sleeves, which keep the cage stable through hard-hit balls and long sessions.

The frame arrives with complete instructions and all hardware, so assembly is straightforward without special tools or a contractor. As a large freight item it ships separately from the rest of the package. It cannot ship by 1, 2 or 3 day air; allow 12 to 20 days for the frame to arrive.

C-Shaped Softball Screen

The JUGS Protector Blue Series C-Shaped Softball Screen is the right shape for fastpitch. It stands 7 feet high and 5 feet wide with a 33 by 18 inch cutout positioned low, close to where a softball is released underhand. A coach or machine delivers through the opening, and the rest of the screen covers the body against line drives back up the middle.

The screen uses black, double-thick, 60-ply Dacron polyester netting on a 1.5 inch diameter, 1.2 mm wall, 1020 cold-rolled steel frame with bolted joints, so it assembles with no welding or lacing. Blue vinyl-covered pearl foam padding wraps the frame, which protects the frame and the ball when hard-hit balls come back. The 5-foot width keeps it light enough to move around the cage or out to a field.

Backdrop and Pitcher's Trainer

The JUGS Batting Cage Backdrop and Pitcher's Trainer hangs at the end of the cage. Hitters get a backstop behind the plate, and pitchers get a strike zone to throw at when no one is hitting. A fastpitch pitcher can throw a full bullpen into the cage without a catcher, and the net contains anything that misses.

Planning Your Softball Cage

Pick a level area a little larger than the 55 by 12 foot footprint so you can walk around the cage and reach the Hitter's Door. Check overhead for power lines and tree limbs, and locate sprinkler lines and buried utilities before setting ground sleeves; your local utility locating service can help with that. Many families put the hitting end nearest the house, where sessions are easy to watch and the door is a short walk away.

Adding a Pitching Machine

No pitching machine is included, which keeps the package flexible. Many softball families start with live arm batting practice and soft toss, then add a machine. Good fits for a 55-foot fastpitch cage include:

Who the JUGS Softball Backyard Net Package Is For

  • Fastpitch softball families who want a home batting cage with matched net, frame and screen.
  • Youth league and high school softball players who need extra reps between team practices.
  • Parents and coaches who throw live batting practice and want a padded screen while doing it.
  • Pitchers who want a backyard strike zone to work on location.
  • Players who already own a softball pitching machine and need a cage for it.

Training in the Cage

For live batting practice, the coach throws from behind the C-screen and the hitter works from the backdrop end. Soft toss and tee work fit at the plate end. On pitching days, a pitcher throws to the backdrop's strike zone. When a machine joins the setup, it goes behind the C-screen, and the screen stays in place whenever someone is swinging. A ball basket near the screen keeps softballs in reach between rounds.

A simple weekly routine makes good use of the space. Start a session with tee work at the plate end to groove the swing, move to soft toss from the side into the backdrop, then finish with live batting practice from behind the C-screen at a distance the hitter can handle. Moving the thrower closer shortens reaction time without anyone needing to throw harder, which is a useful way to prepare a hitter for faster pitching later in the season.

What Is Included

Not included: a pitching machine, softballs or a ball basket. Those are sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this package include a softball pitching machine?

No. It includes the net, frame, C-screen and backdrop. Any JUGS softball or combo machine can be added; the 55-foot cage has room for a machine and screen at one end and the hitter at the other.

Why a C-shaped screen instead of an L-screen?

A softball is released underhand, near the hip. The C-shaped screen's cutout sits low to match that release, so the person pitching stays covered by the rest of the screen.

How much room does the cage need?

The cage is 55 feet long, 12 feet wide and 12 feet high. Plan for a level area a little larger so you can walk around it.

Does everything ship together?

No. The frame is a freight item that ships separately; allow 12 to 20 days for it. It cannot ship by 1, 2 or 3 day air.

Will the net hold up outdoors?

The net is polyethylene, which does not absorb water, and it is black for UV protection. The frame is galvanized steel to resist rust.
