Varsity Double L Screen with Head Protector

About the Varsity Double L Screen with Head Protector

The Varsity Double L Screen with Head Protector is a batting practice screen built for teams with both right handed and left handed throwers. Instead of one L cutout, it has two, one on each side, so any coach can throw from behind it without flipping the screen around. A head protector over the top covers the coach's head as they recover from each throw. The frame is 1.5 inch powder coated steel that bolts together, and a UV treated #60 knotted net slips over it pillowcase style for double protection.

The screen is 72 inches wide and 95 inches tall, narrowing to 42 inches wide at the top. Order it with no wheels, the Standard Wheel Kit or the Pro Wheel Kit.

Two Cutouts, No Flipping

A standard L screen has its cutout on one side, so when a left handed coach takes over from a right handed coach, someone has to pick up the screen and turn it around. The Double L puts a cutout on both sides of a center column of net. A right handed thrower uses one side and a left handed thrower uses the other. That saves time during team practice when several coaches rotate through batting practice.

Head Protector Over the Top

The narrow top section of the screen covers the coach's head and upper body as they finish the throw and step behind the net. At 95 inches tall, the screen gives far more coverage overhead than a standard 7 foot L screen.

Varsity Frame and Net

The Varsity frame is 1.5 inch powder coated steel that bolts together, so it assembles on site and breaks down for storage. A gusset is welded onto each leg for added strength. The UV and weather treated #60 knotted net covers both the front and back of the frame like a pillowcase, so a ball that stretches through the front layer still meets a second layer.

Who the Double L Screen Is For

  • Teams with both right handed and left handed coaches throwing batting practice
  • Programs that rotate several coaches through BP and do not want to flip screens
  • Coaches who want overhead protection on an L screen
  • Facilities where one screen serves many different coaches

Why a Varsity Screen

Varsity screens are built for value. The 1.5 inch frame and #60 knotted net hold up to regular team batting practice while keeping the screen lighter and easier to move than heavier padded screens. If you want padding on the frame, look at the Premium and Pro screens in our L screens collection.

Choosing a Wheel Option

The wheel kits bolt to the base so one coach can tip the screen back and roll it into position. The Pro Wheel Kit uses airless tires with steel plate covers, so there is nothing to go flat. The Standard Wheel Kit is the lower cost option. If the screen stays in one spot, skip wheels and add them later if you need to.

Practice Flow

With a double L screen, coaches can trade off throwing rounds without stopping practice to turn the screen. That keeps hitters moving through the cage and keeps the coach rotation simple during busy team practices.

Setup and Use

Bolt the frame sections together and tighten each joint until snug. Slide the net over the frame from the top and pull it down evenly so both layers sit flat and tight, including around both cutouts. Set the screen on level ground in front of the throwing spot. Throw through the cutout on your throwing arm side and step back behind the center column after each pitch. Recheck the hardware periodically during the season.

Keep balls within reach behind the screen with a Pro Baseball Ball Cart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a double L screen?

It is an L screen with a throwing cutout on both sides, so right handed and left handed throwers can both use it without turning the screen around.

How tall is it?

The screen is 95 inches tall and 72 inches wide, narrowing to 42 inches wide at the top where the head protector sits.

Will it fit in a batting cage?

At 6 feet wide and almost 8 feet tall, it fits in many cages, but measure your cage width and height first, especially for indoor tunnels with low ceilings or netting.

Is the frame padded?

No. This is a Varsity series screen with a bare powder coated frame.

Do I need the wheel kit?

If the screen moves every practice, wheels make it a one person job. If it stays in one spot, you can skip them.
