Valle Eagle T25 Catcher's Training Mitt

The Valle Eagle T25 is a 25 inch catcher's training mitt for baseball, one of the smallest receiving trainers made, built from Japanese steerhide with a two-piece closed web and an adjustable strap wrist back. A game mitt runs 32 to 34 inches around; the T25 gives the catcher a fraction of that pocket, so a pitch has to be received in the same correct spot every time or it does not stick. Catchers use it in warm-ups and receiving rounds to build quiet hands, consistent pocket placement and a faster transfer to the throwing hand, and it is strong enough that professional organizations receive off pitching machines with it at up to 90 mph.

Receiving with No Margin for Error

A baseball catcher's game mitt is designed to hide mistakes; a pitch caught in the heel or the web still gets called. The T25 removes that cover. Its small pocket means the ball only sticks when it is received in the center of the mitt with the glove hand beating the ball to the spot, and a late or stabbing catch rattles out immediately. That instant feedback is what builds the habit of quiet, early hands, and quiet hands are what make borderline pitches look like strikes. The small mitt also puts the ball closer to the throwing hand, which is why catchers who train with it transfer faster on throw-downs.

Built to Take Real Velocity

Because catchers receive harder-thrown balls than any other position, the T25 is built heavier than the infield trainers: Japanese steerhide, USA-tanned lacing of the quality used on Valle's game gloves, and additional padding in the palm. The design and shape came from feedback from professional catchers and the mitt is used by MLB organizations for receiving off pitching machines at up to 90 mph. Catchers who want extra protection on high-velocity rounds add the Eagle G-Pad inside the mitt. The strap wrist back cinches the T25 to the hand so it does not turn on a pitch caught off the corner.

Who This Catcher's Training Mitt Is For

The T25 is for baseball catchers from about age 10 through the professional level who want to train receiving, not just catch bullpens. It is the smallest mitt in the Valle catching line and the most demanding; catchers who want a slightly larger pocket, or a first trainer that feels closer to a game mitt, should start with the Eagle 27S, a 27 inch trainer, and the 27 inch half-web and weighted versions build on that. Softball catchers have the 28 inch T28S. The T25 is made for right-hand throwers only.

How to Use the Eagle T25

Begin with bare-hand and then T25 receiving of baseballs from a coach at short range: beat the ball to the spot, catch it in the center of the pocket, stick it, and bring the throwing hand to the mitt. Move to framing rounds on the corners, low pitches received with the mitt working up, and then machine-fed pitches at increasing velocity. Throw-down work with the T25 sharpens the transfer because the ball is already close to the hand. Blocking drills work too, since the small mitt keeps the hands quiet. Use the T25 for the first part of every catching session and finish with the game mitt.

Sizing a Catcher's Training Mitt

Catcher's mitts are measured around the circumference, not by finger length, which is why the numbers look large. A youth game mitt runs about 31 to 32 inches, an adult game mitt 32.5 to 34. Valle's trainers step down from there: the 32 inch models are the closest to game size, the 27 inch mitts are the everyday trainer for most baseball catchers, and the T25 at 25 inches is the smallest of the line. The rule for choosing is simple. A catcher who is new to training mitts, or under about 12, starts at 27 inches and moves down when clean receiving becomes automatic. A catcher who already frames well and wants the hardest possible receiving drill goes straight to the T25. The smaller the mitt, the more precise the catch has to be, and the more the game mitt feels like a net when it goes back on. Whatever the size, a training mitt is for warm-ups, receiving rounds and drill work; games and full bullpens belong to the game mitt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 25 inches too small to catch live pitching or a machine?

No. The T25 is built for it and is used by professional organizations for machine receiving up to 90 mph. It is small on purpose; the catch has to be perfect, which is the drill.

Is it available for left-handed throwers?

No. The T25 is made for right-hand throwers only.

T25 or 27S for my catcher?

The 27S is two inches bigger and closer to a game-mitt feel, which makes it the easier first trainer. The T25 is the harder challenge for catchers who already receive well and want the smallest pocket available.

Can a 10 to 12 year old use it?

Yes. The T25 is rated for ages 10 and up and the strap back adjusts to a smaller hand.

Is the T25 for softball catchers?

No. The T25 is a baseball trainer. Softball catchers use the 28 inch Eagle T28S, which is sized for the larger ball.

Does it sting?

The palm is padded for training velocity. Catchers receiving hard machine pitching add the Eagle G-Pad for extra protection.
