Pro 7x7 L Screen

About the Pro 7x7 L Screen

The Pro 7x7 L Screen is a full size, padded baseball L screen that fits inside a batting cage and still gives a coach real coverage on the field. The frame is 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide, built from 2 inch steel tubing with a compression bolting system, and it carries a #96 net, one of the heaviest nets used on any protective screen. Thick vinyl wrapped padding covers the frame so the net lasts longer and balls that hit the frame do not come screaming back.

That 7x7 size is the middle ground most programs are looking for. It is small enough to roll into a 12 foot wide cage for indoor batting practice, and big enough to stand behind on the mound for outdoor BP. The L cutout gives the coach a clean throwing lane, while the open area to the side lets ground balls and line drives go through to the infielders so they can test their range during live rounds.

The Pro 7x7 L Screen ships with black padding. Order it with no wheels, or add the Pro wheel kit with airless tires and steel plate covers so one coach can move it in and out of the cage.

2 Inch Steel Frame With Compression Bolting

An L screen takes a beating. It gets hit hundreds of times a session, dragged across turf and dirt, and loaded in and out of storage. The Pro frame is built from 2 inch steel tubing, which is noticeably heavier than the 1.5 inch tubing used on entry level screens. The compression bolting system pulls each joint tight, so the frame stays square instead of loosening and wobbling after a few weeks of use. Extra gussets on the legs and cross joints add stiffness right where a screen usually starts to fail.

A rigid frame matters for safety as much as durability. When a frame flexes, the net goes slack, and a slack net lets a hard line drive push through farther toward the coach. A stiff 2 inch frame keeps the net tight across the whole face of the screen.

#96 Pillowcase Net for Double Protection

The #96 net is a very heavy knotted cord built for high volume batting practice. It slides over the frame pillowcase style, so there are two layers of netting between the hitter and the coach. The front layer takes the impact, and the back layer catches anything that stretches through. This is the same heavy net weight used across the Pro screen line and it is a big step up from the #42 and #60 nets found on lighter screens.

Thick Vinyl Wrapped Padding

The frame is covered with 1.5 inch foam padding wrapped in vinyl. The padding keeps the net from rubbing on bare steel, which is where nets wear through first. It also absorbs the hit when a ball strikes the frame instead of the net, which cuts down on ricochets back toward the coach or into the hitting area. Padding protects the screen too, so it looks and works better season after season.

Indoor and Outdoor Batting Practice in One Screen

Many programs end up buying two L screens: a small one for the cage and a big one for the field. The 7x7 size is designed to do both jobs. Here is how coaches typically use it:

  • In the cage: overhand batting practice and short toss inside a standard tunnel.
  • On the mound: full field batting practice with infielders and outfielders working live.
  • Machine work: set it in front of a pitching machine to protect the person feeding balls.
  • Team practice stations: move it between the cage and the field without needing a second screen.

Who the Pro 7x7 L Screen Is For

The Pro 7x7 L Screen is built for high school and college baseball programs, travel organizations, and training facilities where a coach throws a lot of batting practice. It is also a strong choice for a coach who throws to their own players in a backyard or private cage and wants more coverage than a 5x7 screen offers without jumping to a very large screen that will not fit in a tunnel.

Setup and Use

Bolt the frame sections together and tighten each compression joint until it is snug. Slide the #96 net over the frame from the top and pull it down evenly so both layers sit flat and tight. Set the screen on level ground in front of the throwing spot, with the cutout on your throwing arm side. Check the hardware every few weeks during the season and retighten as needed to keep the frame rigid.

If the screen will move between the cage and the field, the wheel kit is worth adding. A padded 2 inch steel screen this size is heavy to carry. With wheels, one coach can tip it back and roll it where it needs to go. Keep balls organized at the mound with a Pro Baseball Ball Cart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 7x7 L screen fit in my batting cage?

In most standard cages, yes. The screen is 7 feet wide and 7 feet tall, so it fits inside the common 12 foot wide by 12 foot tall tunnel with room on each side. Measure the height and width of your cage before ordering if it is narrower than standard.

How does the 7x7 compare to a 5x7 L screen?

The 7x7 is 2 feet wider, which gives the coach more coverage on the glove side and more net in front of the body. The 5x7 is easier to fit in tight cages and lighter to move. If you throw both indoors and outdoors, the 7x7 covers both.

Can I get other pad colors?

This screen is currently available with black padding. Additional pad colors are expected to be added to the Pro line in the future.

Do I need the wheel kit?

If you move the screen between the cage and the field, or in and out of storage every practice, the wheel kit makes it a one person job. If it stays in one cage, you can skip it.

What does pillowcase style net mean?

The net is sewn like a sleeve and slides over the whole frame, so there is a layer of net on the front and back of the screen. That double layer adds protection for the coach behind the screen.
