About the Markwort Official Leather Corkballs - Individually Boxed - Dozen
Markwort Official Corkballs are official size corkballs: 1.6 oz, 6 1/2 inch circumference, with a stitched leather cover. Each ball comes in its own individual box, and they are sold by the dozen in white or yellow. Corkball is a long-running neighborhood bat and ball game, a small-ball cousin of baseball that started in St. Louis, and these are the balls for leagues, backyard games and batting practice.
What Is Corkball?
Corkball takes the core of baseball, a pitcher, a catcher and a hitter, and shrinks the ball and the bat. Games are played on a narrow strip rather than a diamond, and there is no base running: what the batter hits decides how runners advance. That keeps the game simple to set up and fair for players of different ages, and it can be played by as few as two players. It began on the streets and alleys of St. Louis more than a century ago, and leagues still play there and in other parts of the country.
Why the Markwort Corkball Makes a Good Batting Trainer
At 1.6 oz, a corkball weighs about a third of a 5 oz baseball and is far smaller around, and it is hit with a thin bat with a 1.5 inch barrel. Squaring up a ball that small with a barrel that thin takes a level swing and real focus on the ball, so baseball players and coaches use corkball as a hand-eye and bat control trainer as well as a game. For more small-ball hitting work, see the Toss 'N Train Small Training Baseballs and our full range of training balls.
Choosing White or Yellow
The white corkball has the look of a traditional ball. The yellow corkball is easier to track in the air and to find after a long hit. Both are the same official size and leather build. Catchers in corkball wear a mask made for the smaller ball, with wire bars spaced about 1 1/2 inches apart.
