About the Markwort Molded Rubber Double First Base 15 x 30 x 2.5 in

The Markwort Molded Double First Base is a 15 x 30 inch double wide safety base for baseball, 2 1/2 inches thick and molded from rubber, with a white half and an orange half side by side. It gives the batter-runner and the first baseman separate surfaces at the bag, which is the reason a double first base exists: fewer collisions on close plays at first. Two rubber anchor stakes and two metal ground receptacles come with it.

How the Two Halves Are Used

The white half sits in fair territory and belongs to the fielder. The orange half sits in foul territory and belongs to the runner. On an initial play at first the batter-runner uses the orange side, and once on base the runner returns to the white side for leads, pick-off attempts and tagging up. Leagues add exceptions to that pattern, so check your rule book.

The 2027 High School Rule

National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Rule 1-2-9 takes effect January 1, 2027. It requires high school baseball programs to use either a double first base or a first base 18 inches square. Second and third base do not change. The rule spells out how a double base has to be colored and laid out, so confirm with your state association that a base fits your game field before you order.

Molded Double First Base Construction

This is the molded rubber version of the Markwort double base, not the foam-filled vinyl strap-down model. It has no cover to wear through and no seams to split, and a ribbed underside keeps it rigid. A detachable rubber stake inserts into the bottom of each half and drops into its own metal ground receptacle, so the base anchors at two points. If first base on your field has a single anchor today, plan to set a second receptacle.
