Outfield Gloves

Outfield gloves are the longest gloves on the field, 12 to 12.75 inches for baseball and up to 14 inches for softball, with deep pockets and open webs that help a fielder reach a fly ball and hold it through a dive. A trapeze or H-web keeps the glove light for its length; a cross web adds a little support for the bigger ball.

Outfield Glove Buying Guide

Size

Baseball outfielders usually play 12.5 to 12.75 inches; high school and college players sometimes go to 13. Softball outfielders need 12.5 to 14 inches for the larger ball. Youth outfielders should stay at 12 inches or under so the glove closes on the ball instead of flopping.

Webs for the Outfield

The trapeze web is the traditional outfield choice: a deep, flexible pocket that lets the glove wrap the ball and stays light at 12.75 inches. H-webs are stiffer and hold shape longer. Cross and modified webs suit players who also fill in on the infield and want a shallower pocket.

Leather

Because outfield gloves are long, weight matters more than at any other position. Kip leather saves ounces and breaks in faster; steerhide holds its shape through seasons of use. Either way, plan on a real break-in period before the glove is game ready.
