Baseball Training Bats Buying Guide

What type of bat do you need?

Fungo Bats

Fungo bats are long skinny (usually wood) baseball bats most often used by coaches to hit fly or ground balls. Fungos are lightweight and longer than a game-time bat. The lightweight feel benefits coaches who must repeatedly hit balls in practice. Fungo bats are not designed to hit pitched balls and can only be used for self or soft toss or hit off of a tee.

One Hand Trainer Bats and Short Trainer Bats

One Hand Trainer bats are short bats between 18 and 28 inches long. These bats help improve hand-eye coordination and build muscle memory as well as strength. One Hand Training bats are not designed for use with pitched baseballs, but instead are for tee and soft toss drills. Short Trainer bats are similar and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. However there are also many short trainer bats that are for use with two hands.

Weighted Bats

Weighted bats are, obviously, bats that are heavier than normal and used to build strength. Use a weighted bat to take dry swings during warm-ups. Make sure you focus on your form when using a weighted bat; often a bat can be too heavy and force batters to swing unnaturally.

Hand-Eye or Soft Toss Trainer

Hand-Eye or Soft Toss Training bats are designed to feel like regular bats with a normal handle but a much narrower barrel. These bats will improve hand-eye coordination, strength, and bat control. Use these training bats for soft toss or tee drills.

Flat Bats

Flat Bats are normally the same length as regular bats but are not round. Flat bats have a flat side or sides for ball contact. Since these bats are not round, hitters must maintain a level swing and stay in the hitting zone longer to hit a baseball hard and straight.

Bunt Trainer Bats

Bunt trainers perform exactly as they sound - they help batters bunt. Bunt trainers usually have a very small sweet spot so the hitter has to focus on making contact at a specific spot on the bat.
